Departmental Mandate and Vision

Core Purpose:
The departmental mandate focuses on preventing diseases, protecting health, and promoting healthy living in communities through the provision of essential public health and environmental health services.
Comprehensive Scope:
Operating under structured leadership, the department executes its nationwide duties across three dedicated sections—Cleansing, Inspectorate, and Funerals—ensuring community-wide sanitary compliance and public safety.
Solid Waste Management and Cleansing Services
-
Environmental Sanitation: The Cleansing section actively manages municipal solid waste through collection and transportation, comprehensive street sweeping, public cleansing, and the routine maintenance of council dumpsites.
-
Community Zones and Reduction: Solid waste management services span six distinct service zones across the district (Zones A through F), promoting waste reduction, reuse, recycling, responsible disposal, and strict enforcement against illegal dumping.
Inspectorate and Regulatory Compliance
-
Public Safety and Hygiene: The Inspectorate section safeguards public wellbeing through the promotion of food safety and hygiene, community sanitary inspections, water quality monitoring, premises inspections, and rigorous public health nuisance abatement.
-
Vector and Animal Control: Regulatory efforts are further reinforced through vector and pest control initiatives, trading premises licensing support, community health education, and systematic dog registration and control.
Funeral and Burial Administration
-
Public Health Burial Management: The Funerals section is responsible for the administration and management of burial-related public health functions, including the allocation and management of burial spaces.
-
Dignified Operations: This section ensures public safety through the issuance of burial permits and records, alongside the safe, dignified handling and disposal of unclaimed bodies at designated sites like Mpatamatu Cemetery.
